Yard trimmings are plant debris commonly thrown away while maintaining yards and gardens. The following items are acceptable for curbside yard trimmings collection:

  • Leaves
  • Grass clippings
  • Branches – six (6) inches or less in diameter and four (4) feet or less in length
  • Brush
  • Flowers
  • Roots
  • Wood waste
  • Sod
  • Biodegradable or compostable waste approved for the yard trimmings program
 
The following items are not acceptable and will not be collected: 
  • Loose soil
  • Food waste
  • Plastics and synthetic fibers
  • Lumber
  • Wood or tree limbs over six (6) inches in diameter or four (4) feet in length
  • Human or animal excrement
  • Soil contaminated with hazardous materials

Residents may place yard debris and tree branches in the following bags or containers for curbside collection:
  • BROWN disposable yard trimming bags that do not exceed 35 lbs. in weight (maximum of 20 per collection)
  • Reusable yard trimming bags marked REUSABLE YARD TRIMMING BAG
  • A container marked YARD TRIMMINGS on four sides that does not exceed 32 gallons. City of Atlanta garbage/recycling carts should not be used for yard trimmings.

For 21 or more bags, schedule a bulk collection for proper disposal. Per City code Sec. 130-40 (c)(4), contractors are responsible for removing all yard debris generated from landscaping and tree trimming/removal.

 

City of Atlanta residents (no businesses) may also drop off yard debris at Hartsfield Landfill, 2175 James Jackson Pkwy, Atlanta, GA 30318.

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday – 9:00 am to 4:30 pm / Saturday – 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
