The City of Atlanta Department of Public Works (DPW) offers backyard solid waste collection, free of charge, to individuals that are incapable of placing their garbage and recycling carts at the curb, provided the following requirements are met:

  • Age only criteria. Senior residents who are 70 years of age or older and live alone or reside with individuals between the ages of 12 and 70 with physical limitations.
  • Physical condition criteria. Residents 12-70 years of age with physical limitations.

Eligible residents must present a certificate from a physician licensed by the State of Georgia stating that such person is physically incapable of placing garbage or recycling at the curb due to age or physical condition.

Yard trimmings are not collected from the resident's backyard. All yard trimmings must be placed curbside for collection. 

If eligible based on the above criteria, submit the following:
  • A completed Backyard Service New/Renewal Application (below) that includes a certified statement from a licensed physician which states the resident is 70+ years of age or has physical limitations that prevent the placement of garbage and recycling carts at the curb.


The completed document can be submitted to the Department of Public Works through either of the channels outlined below.

An incomplete form and missing documents will result in service delays. After submitting your request, please allow up to seven (7) business days for a response. Once backyard service is approved, you will be notified of your scheduled collection day. An inspection of the property where backyard service has been requested must be completed within three (3) business days before services begin. City of Atlanta trucks must be able to enter the driveway for collection and the backyard must be accessible to DPW personnel; otherwise, backyard service cannot be provided.  
                 
If backyard service is requested and the person requesting the service does not meet the age and physical condition criteria, the citizen must pay $1,112.62 to receive this service, per City Code Section 130-37. Payments can be made to the address listed above.

SERVICE CANCELLATION: To cancel backyard service, please email your request to pwsettlements@atlantaga.gov or fax 404-546-9073. Be sure to include the resident’s name and service address, as well as the sender’s name if it differs from the resident.
